Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

***We are most interested in weekend exchanges in California and summer exchanges for 2024***

Foodies' Paradise: Our house is a three bedroom, 2 ½ bath Craftsman-style bungalow located in a quiet residential area in North Berkeley. We are located less than a mile from the UC Berkeley campus, downtown Berkeley, and rapid transit to San Francisco. World famous restaurants and cafes, such as Chez Panisse and the Cheese Board, are three blocks away.

We have two adult children, ages 19 and 21, who may join us on our travels. Our house is well designed for a single person, couple, or family. We have a spacious garden in back with apple, plum, fig, lemon and lime trees.

Berkeley is particularly welcoming to children and teenagers, with many playgrounds, parks and activities. A short drive will take you to hiking trails, a vintage carousel, steam trains, and other activities for younger children. For adults, the San Francisco Bay Area offers unparalleled cultural activities, outdoor recreation, and shopping.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

North Berkeley is justifiably famous for "the good life" and everything you need is in easy walking distance. Stroll up to Shattuck Avenue for coffee at a half-dozen excellent cafes. Buy some pizza at the Cheeseboard Collective (voted the best pizza in the U.S. on Yelp). Buy a bottle of wine at North Berkeley Imports. Get your groceries at Andronico's (or if you are on a budget, Safeway). Buy some books at Books, Inc., eat a bagel at Saul's Deli, or a delicious desert at Masse's Pastries.

Right around the corner from us, on Martin Luther King Blvd, there's Mr. Mopps, a large toy store for the kids! And Live Oak Park, with a creek, playground, and tennis and basketball courts, is a short walk in the other direction.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Berkeley is the center of the universe. To the North of us is Wine Country and redwood forests. To the West, San Francisco and beautiful but windy beaches. To the East is Lake Tahoe. And to the South is Silicon Valley. You can drive to all these places, but take public transportation to San Francisco! You don't want the burden of a car in the City.

Berkeley itself is like nowhere else in the world. A refuge for nonconformists and iconoclasts certainly, but also an easy and pleasant place for everyone with an open mind. If you want to see avant garde music or film, you can do so. If you want to watch your kids have a blast at Adventure Playground, a place where kids themselves build the playground, you can do that as well!

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We've arranged seven exchanges and liked every one of the families we have exchanged with. If you are a smoker, our preference is that you smoke outside. We do not own a TV (a very "Berkeley" custom), but your family can watch endless movies on Netflix on the computer. We have wireless internet access.
