Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

!For 2024 no more exchanges possible!

A stay in Zuidlaren can offer you the best of two worlds. Nature, space, stillness next to one of the most beautiful cities in the Netherlands: vibrant Groningen.

Zuidlaren lies in the heart of a national parc and it has once been chosen as greenest village of Europe. It has a lively village center with some nice terraces.
We live in a beautiful part of Zuidlaren: a green lane with lots of old beech and oak trees. Many houses in the street were build around 1930.

It’s a detached, modernised characteristic house that was build in 1936 (architectural style “Amsterdamse school”) with a big garden around it. They told us it was the first house that was build in the street and it had to impress.
Across the street there is a special wooded big parc /terrain called 'Dennenoord/Pineplace' with culturalhistorical value and a monumental status. In 1895 Dennenoord, a mental institution were psychiatric patients lived, was set up. In the parc you find beautiful trees, historic buildings, an animal pasture, a watertower, church, secondhand shop etc. Our kids like to walk there with us, feed the animals vegetable peelings, and the roads are perfect for skating. The terrain/forrest connects our neighbourhood to the center of Zuidlaren.

We renovated and modernised the house through the years. Since we have small children and the most important thing to us, is spending time with them, it has been (and is in some ways) a work in progress. The house is around 180 m2. We want to give the garden in a next fase more love and attention, but it’s green and private on one side. There is a double swing, a small playhouse, sandbox and an trampoline in summer. As well as a large picnic table.

On the ground floor there is a big space with living area in warm colours, play area for kids, kitchen and a round dinner table. The middle part that connects kitchen and living area is not on a picture. On the ground floor there is also a studyroom (this can be used as a fifth sleepingroom), hallway and laundry room and toilet.

Because of the steep roof, lots of nooks and corners on the first and second floor, the rooms are hard to capture on a picture. But cosy they are for sure.

First floor: bedroom with a double bed (160x200) and a treetop view, two children's bedrooms (one room has a small bed 150 cm long, but we have an extra matras 200x80 (and can set up a bed), one bathroom with toilet, shower and bath.
Second floor: 1 children bedroom.

Our property has the shape of a long triangle, on one long side there is a 50 km road. We don’t consider it as busy and quietness is important to us. But opinions can differ. In the later evening/at night there is no traffic. During the day there is normal traffic (going and coming from work, less traffic in holidays).

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Your walk can start from our frontdoor. It’s a short walk and then you are standing in nature, a scenery with sand, heather and lots of beautiful old trees in many shapes (which the kids like to climb). This is part of one of the 21 national parks called the Drentsche Aa.
Zuidlaren is also part of the Unesco Global Geopark “De Hondsrug”. The Hondsrug complex has from east to west five sand/boulder clay ridges and is best expressed in the landscape in North Drenthe where Zuidlaren lies. Stream valleys have developed in this area.
Take a look at the official instagram account of Drenthe ‘oerdrenthe’ for a impression of the beauty.
The long distance Pieterpad-walk passes our house. The province Drenthe is know for its space, nature, quietness, adventures, biking, walking, swimming in forest lakes etc.

There is an endless list of things you can do nearby and somewhat further away. Depending on where you come from everything can maybe called 'nearby' in the Netherlands (Amsterdam is for example a 2 hour drive). We can give customized advice: restaurants and activities with or without children, young children or older children.

Zuidlaren (and the province Drenthe) is loved bij national and international tourists. It has a lake: Zuidlaardermeer and nice restaurants around it. You should definitely bike around it and take the bicycle ferry, you will cross a swamp-area with rare birds like the stern, a pair of sea-eagles and it is also the habitat of beavers and otters. At the lake you can rent things like a supboard or windsurfing material.
Zuidlaren has a typical Dutch mill (museum) open for public. The water in front of it connects to the Zuidlaardermeer. In summer you can take a steamboattrip from the mill to the lake.
There is also a playparc called "De Sprookjeshof"(outdoor and indoor).
And in our villagecenter there is even a restaurant with a Michelin star: de Vlindertuin/the Butterflygarden. https://www.restaurant-devlindertuin.nl. Make sure you make a reservation a long time before the swap.

15 min drive and you arrive in heaven: 't Nije hemelriek in Gasselte. The big walk around the two green/blue lakes in the woods is so nice and it's so fun to be here in every season. There are beaches and also an adventurewaterpark.

Haren (10 min by car) has a large botanical garden: Hortus Botanicus Haren. Our kids love the hortus. Especially the Chinese garden and the rockgarden. There is also a restaurant and a tiny (water)playground.

Assen en Groningen are both capital city's and a 15 min drive. Lots of museums, theaters, concerthalls here. Lots of possibilities for music lovers. The Forum, an architectural highlight and cultural center, is a mustsee in Groningen! Also the Asserforrest is very nice.

We like to go to Norg (15 min) and its beautiful forests and cute center, and also Veenhuizen (25 min), an area with lots of cultural historical value and a fantastic jailmuseum. Have you ever took a ride on a crookbus? A colony for orphans and beggars, a state correctional facility and a prison village: Veenhuizen was it all. Nowadays a World Heritage Site.

Westerbork memorial (30 min) - here are the stories shared of the more than one hundred thousand Jews, Sinti and Roma that were deported from Westerbork to concentration- and extermination camps in the east.
In Westerbork, is also the Milkyway walkingroute. And you can see 14 enormous telescopes. A place where history, nature and science meet.

Orvelte (30 min) is a pitoresque monumental village where you also can visit Zoo Bizar. The smallest zoo in the Netherlands, where you can meet for example Brechje the tarantula ;-).

The Groninger landscape is also perfect for nature lovers (for example the Dollard with many different birds and a seal-watchingwall). In Pieterburen you can visit the sealcenter, where they take care of sick seals to let them free once recovered.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Nature in Zuidlaren area is very close. You can (mountain)bike and walk endlessly. But there is also much to see and do culturally. The capitals Assen en Groningen are both only 15 minutes away. The province Drenthe is among other things known for it’s ‘hunebedden’/dolmen (tomb consisting of a capstone supported by two or more upright stones). The road passing Zuidlaren is called the hunebed-highway ;). The Hunebed Centre in Borger is a must! Here you find the largest hunebed, a museum, a rockgarden and a prehistoric park.

There is enough to do and see closeby, but the nature at the northern harbour town Lauwersoog (National Parc Lauwersmeer) is also amazing. We would recommand to make a short stop at Zoutkamp (former fishermans town with a museum), maybe eat an icecream or “kibbeling”. Its a 50 min drive to harbour of Lauwersoog and here you can take the boat (50 min) for a daytrip to the small wadden island Schiermonnikoog. Also Unesco heritage. Maybe you will spot some seals or make an adventurous walk on the wad with low tide, called wadwalking.

2024 leaves no more space for exchanges (and we are not planning for 2025 yet.)

We believe a house is to live in, to feel free. You are welcome, relax, make yourself at home! We will leave our home clean and would like it returned in the same way. We have very friendly neighbours, who would be happy to help if needed.
